-
Be prepared
for presenting your songs…live and recorded. You
never know who’s listening!
-
Be nice in
every situation and considerate of everyone’s time.
-
Get outside
yourself and get objective evaluations of your songs
from a variety of people.
-
Get your
songs into as many hands as possible…especially the
new, up-and-coming artists. (caution: see
“gherming” in Don’ts!).
-
“Write-Up”
and CO-write as much as possible.
-
Use a well
defined, easy to understand format.
-
Be
“WalMart” not “Hallmark!”
-
Use KISS
(Keep It Simple Songwriter).

-
Don’t
Gherm! That is, NEVER hand out unsolicited CDs or
tapes…stalking music industry people. If you do, you
will find yourself locked out.
-
Don’t get
trapped in “Ballad-mode.” This is true in writing
AND performing.
-
Don’t
throw away your money by creating a demo before your
song is ready.
-
Don’t use
trite rhymes and overused clichés. Look for fresh and
clever ways to say things.
-
Don’t be
too poetic or wordy…be conversational.
